Free falling

Part 1: Skydiving and leaving the plane behind

By Arlene Fleming, About.com

Want to take a flying leap? The adventurous side of air travel is one where your legs are the landing gear. Skydiving frees you of seat belts, but is not for the faint of heart. If you want to take a flying leap, and aren't afraid of barrelling towards the ground, then skydiving may be for you.

Here are some options when you are ready to leave the plane behind:

  • Dive from the skies over southern Florida and see more than the beaches and amusement parks. Skydive America offers birthday jumps and a whole host of gift certificates. They also have on-site camping and accommodation facilities for those who aren't done with their drop zone experience!
  • Located within driving distance of both Los Angeles and San Diego Skydive Elsinore offers jumps, accommodations, and lots of themed events throughout the year.
  • SWOOP is run by volunteers and located near Toronto, Ontario. They offer a number of different options for first timers.
  • Skydive Houston gets you through your jumps and then invites you to cool off in their swimming pool or feast at a Texas BBQ.
